Boston, Mass. —

In a fundraising e-mail circulated on Feb. 11, Jill Stein, running as a Green-Rainbow candidate for governor, promised potential supporters she’ll hire a “top-flight” campaign manager and field director and says her campaign “is going to change politics forever in Massachusetts.”

Stein asked potential donors to give what they can and to consider the maximum contribution of $500, saying it breaks down to less than a $1.40 per day, or the cost of “a small coffee, a half a gallon of gas, a bottle of water.”

Stein told readers she can’t compete with major party candidates or run TV ads later in the campaign cycle without resources.

“Without adequate funding, we won’t be able to get our message out,” she wrote. “The mainstream media will marginalize us and prevent us from joining the debates. The enormous potential that this election cycle offers us will be lost.”

Stein was handily defeated in previous runs for both governor and secretary of state. With Gov. Deval Patrick now in receipt of a primary opponent in 2006 Green-Rainbow Party nominee Grace Ross, Stein stands to be one of four candidates on the November ballot in a race that one candidate, independent Treasurer Tim Cahill, said last month could be won by a candidate receiving as little as 35 percent of the overall vote.

Aside from Patrick, Cahill, Ross and Stein, Republicans Charlie Baker and Christy Mihos face each other in the GOP primary.
