Letter: Principled journalism
at its best
Wednesday, November 29, 2006 - Metro West News I'm writing to thank the MetroWest Daily News editorial board for your endorsement of my candidacy for Secretary of the Commonwealth. In advocating for a new vision in the Secretary's office, your editorial made a powerful case for greater openness and debate on Beacon Hill -- two elements of a healthy democracy that have been sadly lacking in the Commonwealth in recent years. You courageously stated what many felt but perhaps dared not be the first to say. In so doing, you opened the flood gates to a rush of last minute editorial endorsements of my campaign, all calling for government transparency, democratic reform, and renewed civic engagement. With the unprecedented Democratic Party dominance of Massachusetts government that follows the November election, and the continuing decline of the state Republican Party, the need for an alternative voice to challenge an entrenched Beacon Hill machine is greater than ever. News that old-guard Republicans left their Party for the Patrick camp further emphasizes that the political spectrum at the top has narrowed. It is my hope that the Green-Rainbow Party will help provide a much-needed alternative political voice -- to scrutinize for abuses of entrenched power, and to advocate for the vast unmet needs for affordable health care, housing, education, sustainable living-wage jobs and a healthy environment. In the absence of real political debate, independent critically minded journalism is all the more important as a safeguard for democracy. In this regard, the MetroWest Daily News deserves much praise for being the first to recognize the ill-health of our democracy as an election issue, and to call for reforms promoting openness, political dialogue and civic engagement. In so doing, the MetroWest Daily News has distinguished itself as an eminent example of the principled journalism that is critical to revitalizing our democracy. Jill Stein Green-Rainbow Party |
