Obama's New Year's resolution against Bill of Rights

ndaa.jpgYesterday, New Year's Eve, on the same day that most Americans were busy with celebrations, and the news media was out of the office, President Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) into statute. As I described in a video last week, the NDAA authorizes this or any future president to declare anyone -- even U.S. citizens on U.S. soil -- a terrorist subject to indefinite detention, without trial. This is the kind of unlimited power granted to government leaders in dictatorships, not democracies.

Our civil liberties are the foundation of American liberty. They are also essential for restoring economic justice in this age of unprecedented inequality -- where nearly half of Americans  are now in the ranks of the poor or near poor, while the richest 400 individuals own as much wealth as the less fortunate half of all Americans combined. To correct such profound disparities, we must be able to speak out, assemble and petition our government for redress -- and do so without fear of police violence and the threat of arbitrary imprisonment.

As we look forward to the New Year we deserve, this latest violation of our democratic rights by the President and Congress underscores why we must stand up and reclaim our political voice. We can achieve a peaceful, just, green future if we insist on it, as so many of us are already doing in our communities. We can also start doing that right now in the 2012 presidential election.

Click here and here to learn more about the personal role of President Obama in pushing for the anti-civil liberties provisions that he just signed in to law.

Thanks for all you're doing.

  Jill Stein

Obama has pledged not to use these powers while he’s president, but he approves of future presidents having these powers. He is trying to coerce voters into pulling the lever for him out of fear that the Republican candidate will use them.

Colbert sums it up nicely here: http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/405274/january-05-2012/the-word—-catch-2012?xrs=synd_facebook

I hope that Stein can find a way to call Obama’s bluff on this one.

I congratulate Jill for so quickly jumping on this story. Each day I go to Rocky Anderson’s website and to Jill’s for I admire both for what they are doing. But today I am especially impressed with Jill’s quick response; I did not see this on Anderson’s website. To me this is an indication that Jill is running a better campaign at this stage than Rocky. Keep it up Jill.

Also if you want to keep abreast of developing news on how Obama plays loose with what he is doing – read the daily blog of Glenn Greenwald, a constitutional lawyer who, I think, has one of the clearest heads functioning in today’s internet media. I urge all to read him at www.salon.com/writer/glenn_greenwald/

It is also time for the US to have a woman president!

Apparently, in contrast to the Salon.com article linked in Dr. Stein’s blog, there was indeed a signing statement saying that the executive branch will not enforce this law against legal residents and US citizens in the United States.

The whole bill still doesn’t sit well with me.

I was rather amazed President Obama signed it and for me this was the last straw, I am sorry to say… I would have expected more of one with an understanding of our Constiution.

Best of luck Jill. I think you will win the way he did – grassroots.

And I believe a woman with a deep sense of sustainability will indeed provide the kind of government we deserve and our Founders created for us.

I read your words and I feel in my heart you are a true American and friend of the Earth and all her inhabitants.

We are indeed all one and connected. The future is in knowing this and living the way all our spiritual masters have suggested.

Thank you and
Best wishes,

A lot of people think that Obama can do no wrong. Read this: http://t.co/EsL2TjrI. How can he even? It's unconstitutional.

So sad that most people don’t even know what this Act allows. Those that do think this is good because “it stops terrorists”. But, hey, give it a good sounding name like the Patriot Act and everyone is on board. Shameful. Btw, I’d love to help you campaign.
